In many parts of the globe there are people who lack stable facilities and unfortunately do not have the resources to build the infrastructures that they need.  Engineers Without Borders (EWB), USA division (EWB-USA), was founded in 2001 and is a non-for-profit organization comprised of primarily engineering students and engineers working to make a difference in developing nations.

According to Jim Keady, over 90% of the things you wear are made in sweatshops around the world. Keady is a human rights activist that is most known for his relentless criticism of the unethical practices of Nike, the leading company in the global sportswear industry. He started his non-profit organization Team Sweat in order to formally address Nike’s ethical standards.

The words “toys” and “military” are rarely used in the same sentence. In the case of the Beanie Baby Ambassador Program (BBA), however, the two terms are intricately linked. The program mediates the process of sending Beanie Babies to U.S. troops abroad, who then distribute them to children in their areas.  Although this program is no longer running, as Hess and others involved in BBA decided to close down the organization in September of 2009, the organization made a significant impact while running and will be remembered.

Thirty-nine lives were stripped from innocent civilians on Monday, March 29th in Moscow during a terrorist subway bombing executed by two female suicide bombers. This subway bombing was acknowledged as the worst terrorist attack Russia has experiences since 2004 when a male suicide bomber took the lives of 41 people and injured over 120 at the Avtozavodskaya subway station.

April 10, 2010 marks an unforgettable day of tragedy in Poland. A plane carrying Poland’s President, Lech Kaczynski, crashed while he was en route to Russia in order to attend a World War II memorial service. BBC News reports that all 96 passengers have been pronounced dead.

Deformed vehicles, overcrowded hospitals and damaged buildings created a sense of panic among Colombian civilians on the morning of March 24th. A car bomb went off in Buenaventura, Colombia that reeked havoc on the residents and the local hospital after killing six residents and injuring over 42. Out of the six victims that died, five were civilians and one was a policeman. The car bomb exploded inside a Mazda 323 hatchback vehicle and led the hospital to declare a state of emergency, resulting in chaos and unanswered questions.
