When most people hear the word "hurricane" they connect the word "loss" to it. Recently, when people hear the word Katrina, they connect it with total devastation. As with so many others in my home city of New Orleans, I did experience many losses. My home was flooded, forcing my family to evacuate for several weeks. My great-grandmother passed away during the hurricane as well. Despite such negative things, I think that when I recall the hurricane years from now, I will remember the positive things I gained from the hurricane experience, rather than all the negatives.

The one hundred thirteen degree weather was especially harsh in the barren town of Reynosa, where there wasn’t shade in sight. However, the motivation to provide shelter for my new friends compensated for any discomfort caused by the Mexican climate. As Ramón Lopez came towards me I immediately noticed his brown calloused feet walking on the rocky dirt road. He smiled and called out “trabaja!” while handing me his cement-mixing shovel, and then sat down to rest with his two younger brothers. I watched them, marveling at how well they got along, and wondering at what time in American society it had become unacceptable for teenagers to enjoy the company of their younger siblings. I then regained my focus and began the arduous task of mixing cement manually in order to lay the floor for the Lopez’s first legitimate house.

For my Spring Break this year, I went to Greensboro, North Carolina on a service trip through the BC group Appalachia Volunteers. Because the organization has grown so much in the past years, trip locations expand well beyond the Appalachia region ranging from Ohio and Pennsylvania all the way down to Louisiana. Preparations for the trips begin early in the school year and we met in large meetings weekly discussing different social justice issues and learning about the regions to which we would be traveling.
